A Message from Jayne Amico - The President

Dear Friends,

With 2010 behind us I knew I would have good news to share about the changes at MVSS! What I did not know was just how great that news was going to be until I went over the paperwork! After reviewing the summer’s admissions, and the resulting outcomes, I was thrilled to realize that my decision to focus mostly on GCN birds (greatest conservation needs) and birds with specialized needs or foraging methods was extremely beneficial to the birds in care. My success rate jumped from last season’s 59% release rate to a whopping 75% returned to the wild! It proved the age old quantity versus quality theory, by reducing the number of birds in care I was able to focus on each individual more closely than ever resulting in a much higher success rate.

Another change that resulted from the reduction of birds in care was my now having the ability to provide all of the care and volunteers were only needed when I was required to be away. Being the sole caregiver was also beneficial because I was able to oversee all aspects of their care and was quick to recognize any problems that may have occurred.

With a very successful busy season behind me I am now looking forward to spending the winter months providing educational programs to the rehabilitation and public communities, as well as plan for future conservation efforts for 2011.

As always your generous support of my efforts is what continues to allow me to carry out the mission of this organization – conservation of migratory songbirds through education, rehabilitation and preservation of their habitat.

I truly appreciate your support!

Jayne Amico

Join our group of volunteers that is growing bigger and better each year. There are many ways you can volunteer.  By volunteering at the center you will not only assist in the daily tasks but will have the oppurtunity to observe, interact and help care for all the songbirds. Transporting songbirds for people who cannot get them to us, transferring to or from another rehabilitator, or bringing a bird to the vet is a valuable service and greatly needed. Any assistance with fundraising is greatly appreciated. For more information email jayne@mvssanctuary.org
